Chikankari is one of Lucknow's most treasured crafts: delicate floral and shadow-work embroidery, stitched entirely by hand. A single kurta can hold days of an artisan's patient work. With a little care, it will stay beautiful for years.
1. Hand wash, gently
Wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent. Swirl softly and avoid scrubbing the embroidered areas. For the first wash, or for very fine pieces, dry cleaning is the safest choice.
2. Never wring
Wringing pulls and puckers the threads. Instead, press the water out gently between two towels.
3. Dry in the shade
Strong sunlight can fade colours and weaken fine fabrics like mul and georgette. Dry flat or on a hanger in the shade.
4. Iron on the reverse
Turn the garment inside out and iron on a low-to-medium setting. Placing a thin cotton cloth over the embroidery adds extra protection and helps the stitches stand out beautifully.
5. Store with care
Fold neatly and store in a breathable cotton bag rather than plastic. Keep away from sharp jewellery and zips that can catch the threads.
A note on the handmade
Tiny irregularities in stitching are the signature of the artisan's hand, not flaws. They are what make your piece one of a kind.
