Our Story

A mother and son, building a brand together

Kala Kari Creations was born at home in Ahmedabad, from one simple belief: when a parent and child dream together, they can build something beautiful together.

We are Aman Kotak and Sonal Kotak, a son and his mother. Two months ago, we stopped saying "someday" and started Kala Kari Creations from our home.

Where our story begins

Aman studied Business Administration and specialised in Marketing. Sonal studied Commerce and spent years running different businesses alongside Aman's father, Hiren Kotak, before giving her time to the family as a homemaker.

Different generations, different paths, but the same dream: a business of our own, built with our own hands and grown together. So we decided to stop waiting and start.

What building a brand together has taught us

  • Every generation brings a strength. Sonal brings years of hands-on business experience. Aman brings his training in marketing and a feel for how today's customers shop. Together, we cover far more ground than either of us could alone.
  • We go to the source, together. We both travel to meet our artisans in person, talk to them about their craft and choose every piece by hand.
  • Every decision is shared. We plan our strategy side by side, and we've divided our responsibilities so each of us leads where we're strongest.
  • Trust is our biggest asset. Working with family is a joy when you believe in each other. Our easy rapport keeps the work light, even on long exhibition days.
  • We show up in person. You'll meet us at live exhibitions, and you'll see every new piece first on our social media.

To every mother and child with a dream

If you are a mother who once set her own dreams aside, or a son or daughter who wants to build something with the person who raised you, this is for you. You don't need a big office or a big budget to begin. We started at home, with two people who believed in each other.

Start small, start together, and keep going. We hope our story inspires you to have that conversation at your own dining table.

Where we're going

What started in our home now has a bigger goal: to reach women and girls across India, wherever you live, and bring handcrafted Chikankari, Jaipuri hand-block and Kutchi pieces to your doorstep through this website.

Every piece you choose supports the artisans we work with, and a small family business built on trust. Thank you for being part of our story.

With love, Aman & Sonal

Tradition, Beautifully Worn.

Kala Kari means the art of the hand. It is the name we chose because everything we make begins and ends with one: the hand that sketches a motif, carves a wooden block, guides a needle through fine mul, or presses colour onto cloth.

Three crafts, one house

Every Kala Kari piece begins in one of three craft homes of India:

  • Lucknow: Chikankari (चिकनकारी). Delicate shadow-work and floral needlework, stitched by hand on soft, breathable fabric.
  • Jaipur: Hand-block printing (ठप्पा छपाई). Hand-carved wooden blocks pressed onto cotton, one impression at a time.
  • Kutch: Kutchi craft (कच्छी कारीगरी). Ajrakh, patchwork and mirror work in bold, earthy colour from the Rann of Kutch.

How we work

We work closely with artisans, in small batches, on natural fabrics like cotton, mul and silk. There is no mass production and no rushing. That is why no two pieces are ever exactly alike: a slightly shifted block, a stitch that leans its own way. These are the signatures of the maker, and we celebrate them.

Why we do it

India's textile crafts are carried by people, not machines. Every time you choose a handcrafted piece, you help keep a skill alive and a family of artisans at work. We want these crafts to be worn every day, not just saved for special occasions, so we design pieces that feel easy, comfortable and modern while staying true to their roots.

From the artisan's courtyard to your wardrobe: thank you for being part of the story.
